The fans of Sony Ericsson are especially proud of the camera installed in the K750i. This model was highly appreciated by the consumers due to the perfect combination of simplicity and convenience together with some powerful characteristics. The main feature, that ensured enormous sales, was the camera that had been developed under the subbrand Cyber-Shot. In 2005-2006 it was rather difficult to distinguish between the mother brand Sony and its daughter company Sony Ericsson. The common cameras were highly developed in comparison with the simple camera units installed in the handsets and the former had used to have superiority in the specifications. The K800i hasn’t bridged this difference, but nevertheless the Sony cameras had the lower sales. This moment was disputable, and badly affected the K850i, as the company engineers in a hurry removed a Sony camera, as it, in fact, had the stills, which were as good as in the budget cameras.
But in case the technological model is so savagely cropped, the company has nothing to do but to turn these disadvantages into advantages or to make an emphasis on the image, for example, interesting design and so on. Thus Sony Ericsson started producing the handsets in these conditions. They used average components and created a device targeted not on the techie, as they had used to do, but on the less fastidious users, which are not eager to get an ultimate-solution for nice sum of money.
The first prerequisite to move to the image solutions was the W880i of last year together with its follower W890i. Both phones could boast about compact size and a thin case, which the music part was as average as in its rivals. But after Nokia 5310, the thin case stopped being an obstacle to the qualitative sound, and the Walkman-solutions were distinguished only due to the interesting design and functional program platform.
Design
It isn’t an easy task to create a wheel once again, and one should be careful when creating a new interesting design. As to Sony Ericsson C902 you can easily notice the features inherited from the K770i, as well as the work, which was done to make the design individual. This work isn’t a surprise, as after all our guest is an image device, but not the K850i’s successor.
The phone is a straightforward candybar phone measured 108 x 48.5 x 10.6; the size is common to the classical thin handsets. As you see, it is a common Sony Ericsson candybar phone, which has the same thickness as the latest devices of the company, for example, W890i, G900, T650i. This slim phone rather comfortably fits the hand, though we miss the bigger curves of the rear fascia.
The phone weighs 107g. This very tangible weight makes even better our impression of the thorough assembly, which also includes the aluminium trimmings as the secondary material of the casing.
The front panel, regardless the colur scheme of the sample, mainly consists of the glossy transparent plastic with a black surface layer. The framing depends on the main colout of the casing and can be either luscious red or swift black.
It is up to you which colour scheme is the best one, while we’d like to look at the glossy back area of the front panel.
One centimeter of the upper part of the casing is separated from the other part with an even cut, under which in the middle you see a big earpiece covered with a tiny grille. To right of it you can find a square window of the additional CIF-camera for the video calling; to the right the manufacturer placed a light sensor, which by a third raises the brightness of the screen in the sun.
The screen is placed slightly below the upper cut of the casing and we think it is worth talking about. Unless its younger cousin C702, the vendor utilizes in the phone TFT-matrix with 2’’ diagonal, as well as in the image solutions of the company, for example, the W890i; to compare the T650ihas a smaller 1.9’’ screen. The physical dimensions of the matrix are 31 x 41.4mm. The manufacturer claims the screen is capable to show 262000 colours. The common screen resolution is 240 x 320 and it shows a sharp picture with almost unnoticeable pixels. The later is hardly can be seen, due to the screen being almost on the same level with the casing. Its protection from the mechanical damages is provided with the thick glass, which resists fine scratches. The other specifications of the screen are not so good, as the colour temperature is lowed to 5800K or even less, it means that instead of the white colour you see a light shade of yellow, though it is contrast enough. The maximal brightness is rather convenient for the twilight, but when in the daylight the brightness seems to be minimal.
Nevertheless, in the sun the screen doesn’t lose the sharpness of the picture and is only half faded. The viewing angles are traditionally very good: about 170 degrees in both planes. The sides of the screen house 8 touch-sensitive keys, which we will describe later; now we’d like to mention only that they are the very reason, why the vendor used this screen in the cameraphone.
Under the screen you find a D-pad, which notably juts out from the other surface. The phone has two softmenu keys placed in the top part of the pad, Activity menu key, cancel key. Two latter keys flank call and end keys, which rise a lot. The end key doubles as the power key. Between two vertical lines of key the manufacturer placed a square navi key framed with a silvery band with a central selected button. As you can guess, the navigational key juts out from the softmenu key, thus the user can navigate through the phone menu with minimal number of the false pressings. But when the fast texting or navigating, the ergonomics of the navigational unit turns to be mediocre, as the matt phone keys often get under the finger instead of the softmenu keys, while the select button doesn’t rise enough. The keys have an average travel with a mediocre click which is followed by a quiet mechanical snap.
The numerical keys are more comfortable in use, though we have some complaints about a glossy texture, which is handy in cold, but turns to be annoying after 20-30 minutes of texting, when it is very hot. The keys are distinguished enough only to enter a phone number or to text a short message without looking at the keys, but nothing more. The buttons have the same soft travel with a quiet snap and an average click. As to the backlit, we’d like to speak about it separately.
While the impression from the V-shaped backlit of all key is rather good, it makes the texting in the darkness rather unhandy, as you have to recollect which letters are placed in the side vertical rows of keys.
The sides of the casing are decorated with funny vertical stripes, which resemble child gaiters or the clown costume. If we continue the nostalgia, we can recollect the other happy moments from the childhood, but still today we have another theme of talk. It is interesting, but the silvery stripes a bit stand out from the red ones, thus it gives you unusual tactile feedback.
The top end is free from elements, while the bottom end is notable only for the mic hole.
The left side can boast about only Fast Port for different kinds of wired accessories.
The right side houses notably jutting out tactile volume rocker-key, which is placed on the place where we used to see a dedicated camera key. The volume key can be used only when holding the handset in the left hand, as when in the right hand, you have to elaborate new ways of holding it.
The rocker-key has an easy long travel distance with a distinct click. Close to the middle of the casing the manufacturer embedded a camera key, which also focuses with a first pressing.
The travel of the button is rather tough, thus it allows to take photos when on the go and holding the phone with one hand only.
The elements on the right side of the device are placed in this uncommon order due to the unusual construction of the C902. The rear side of the phone certainly reminds you of Sony Ericsson G900, and not only because of the sign of the 5 megapixel camera. But how can it be, there is a sign, but there is no camera? Here, we see rather interesting feature, namely the number of big cuts placed in the top end of the left and right sides of the casing.

Hold the phone with two fingers on these cuts and try to pull the casing up. And in this way you will discover why there is a cut on the front fascia as well as on the back sides a bit lower in the middle.
Let’s look at the front panel once again and appraise the lens of the CIF-camera, a small hole of the loudspeaker and light sensor. It turns out we have to pull up a common cap, which reveals its purpose when looking at the rear fascia.
Here we see a small camera objective lens of the 5 megapixel camera with autofocus flash, tine self-portrait mirror and diode flashlight. As the stop to the camera shutter the vendor used a transparent insert with four blue light diodes.
As the front panel gets rubbed after a week because of the tightly set shutter-cup, it was reasonable to utilize the slightly embedded protective camera glass, though the silvery frame of the camera resists the scuffing.
In the bottom part of the casing we see an antenna, consequently, we were right when thinking about our tactile feedback. The polyphonic loudspeaker protected with a tiny grille with three big cuts looks rather interesting.
The most part of the rear cover is separated with the aforementioned edges by a small cut below and a broad silvery line on the top. That is exactly the battery cover made of the stainless steel, which can be discovered in the bright sun. The bottom part of the casing features a small cut, which you have to pick up and pool towards yourself. Due to the top big central rails you should make some efforts and the long nails will be a great help to you.
The cover hides many steel casings, for example, the bottom area with a M2 memory card slot.
The handset supports the memory cards up to 32GB, though you can hardly find the 12GB memory cards in sale.
When working with the slot mechanism, you have at first put the card on the contacts and then press the folding door. Nearby you find a SIM card slot, which doesn’t support a hot-swap because of the battery used as the stop.
The phone utilizes a 930mAh Li-Pol battery BST-38, which runs almost 8 hours in condition of the perfect signal. In condition of the Moscow networks, this performance falls to four and a half hours, though we are much more interested in the complex performance from one charging. With 30 minutes of talks, 2 hours of music playback, 30 minutes of work with the camera and one hour of gaming, the battery lasts up to two and a half days. User interface
Sony Ericsson C902 is based on the renewed A200, as well as the C702 and C905. The main changes in comparison with the initial version affected the visualization of the interface, but we will speak about it a bit later.
In the stand-by mode the corners of the top part of the screen houses the traditional 5-degree signal strength indicator and battery indicator. They frame a field for different system indicators, from missed events and active Bluetooth to silent alert mode. The indicator of the started Java application was changed into the one reminding the symbol of Active Menu.
 
Below on the screen you can find the operator name and system information. The bottom part of the screen shows date, digital clock and timer counting, if it is started. In the bottom you find three signs to the softmenu keys, which are strictly bound with the certain functions. To quickly call up some particular functions, you can use the declines of the navi key, to which you can assign the most functions including Java-midlets. If the four shortcuts are not enough for you, you can use a tag tab in the Active Menu. Besides it, there are common tabs in WEB-browser: favorite, missed events, running apps.
 
 
 
The main menu consists of 12 icons, and we can’t say undoubtedly that they are well displayed. The renewed A200 makes it possible to change the design of the menu regardless the chosen theme. The icons have been thoroughly redrawn, while the graphics has been substantially simplified. The icons turn out to be simpler, while the graphics resembles the one utilized in Siemens CX65. As long with the enlarged icons, the designers managed to get rid of the cursors, which even animation was a main keystone in the first phone from the Kseries.
Besides the classical 3x4 grid, the phone provides two more variants of icons, which are alike to the variations of Flash-themes installed in the phones based on the A100. There is a carousel, which icons are smoothly turned over. The other variant of the arranging the icons can be accepted as the obvious attempt to follow the fashion, as there is senseless to depict a big icon without animation on the big screen. The latter variant of arranging the icons depends on the content of the available theme. If the theme includes the set of icons, you can use them. The themes themselves can be switched in the list of function falling out in the main menu.
 
 
 
The interface was enriched with the more animation, though the K850i has it more than a user needs. They substantially improved the smoothness of the falling out functional windows, while the icons from the top line smoothly appeared on the line or disappears.
Besides the fast capabilities, a user can use the backgrounds in the Jpeg, Bmp, GIF and SWF formats.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The profiles are still limited by 7 add-ins, which can be changed in terms of the following parameters:
- Ring volume
- Increasing ring
- Vibrating alert
- Key sound
- Divert calls
- Accept calls
- The way to receive a call (certain key or any key except the call end button).
6 profiles may change the names, but the images remain unchangeable.
 
 
 
 
Phone book
To work with a phone book is very easy, though it has many useful features. It can synchronize with the VCF-forms, or send them via Bluetooth; the data base can be copied from the sim and vice versa. The screen shows at the time six entries; after having chosen a contact you can see its phone numbers. In case an entry has several numbers you can navigate between them with the common horizontal declines. Unfortunately, having chosen several entries, you can only add them to the recipient list of a message, while to delete and moved them is possible only when the corresponding functions are used. The phone memory saves up to 1000 entries and 7000 phone numbers.
 
 
 
 
 
Besides the 7 phone numbers you can add to each contact the following information:
- name
- E-mail
- Web address
- ringtone and picture
- title
- company
- street
- city
- region
- postal code
- country, where the work is.
- the same address information for the residence
- note with up to 511 symbols
- birthday.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
The call lists don’t have any functionality regardless from that, they are launched from the main menu or by means of pressing call send key in the stand-by. There are four horizontal tabs sorting the calls into incoming, outgoing, missed and all. Each section is able to save up to 30 calls, and besides each contact has only one tab.
 
Messages
The handset comes with a handy application to create SMS/MMS. As usual, you are enabled to view the emoticons as pictures. The maximal size of the text message amounts to 1188 symbols.
 
 
 
 
 
The MMS application remains unchangeable. It has eye-catching interface to create compound messages up to 300Kb. You are enabled to attach audio files, pictures, video clips. The necessary apps to create attachment may be opened right from this menu (camera, voice recorder).
 
 
 
 
 
The email client allows to adjust a new account through five steps.
Firstly, you enter your name and email address. Then follows login and password, after that the phone suggests your receiving the other settings from the server Sony Ericsson.com/support. If there is no access to the Internet, the last two steps are as follows: choose the connection type (POP3, IMAP4) and enter incoming and outgoing servers.
 
 
 
 
 
As for the interface changes we can mention only the changed background of writing/reading messages.
 
 
 
All enclosed files can be saved in the phone memory, and that is very handy.
Organizer
The phone has five alarms, to each of them you can choose the active days, time, melody, radiofrequency, or use a broadcast of the FM-receiver with an output to the polyphonic loudspeaker.
 
 
 
 
Calendar
There are two ways of viewing: monthly or weekly with each day having an hourly schedule. After choosing the necessary weekday, you can quickly create a reminder. The latter has lots of settings. They are as follows: subject, start time, duration, reminder (5-30 minutes before), recurrence (daily, weekly, monthly, early), location. To cap it all, you are enabled to add small description of the event. As you see, the reminder is not the perfect one, but it is rather good taking into account, that it isn’t the separate organizer, but just a function of the mobile phone.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Notes
Here you can create common notes 254 symbols long.
 
Timer
It is a common timer. You fix a time to within a second, and see the count in the stand-by mode.
 
Stopwatch creates up to 9 laps.
 
Calculator allows to make the simplest arithmetics.
 
The presence of the code memo is very intrigue. In the rest, the 4-digit password symbolizes only, that these notes are very important.
 
Multimedia Menu
The Multimedia Menu hasn’t changed much since its predecessors based on the first version of the A200. The Settings as before includes only the screen orientation settings. Owing to the position sensor, the phone automatically changes the screen orientation.
 
Video
This part of the menu includes a common sorting tool and the player itself, which doesn’t support files with the resolution exaggerating 320 x 240 pixels. There a stop-frame function, which allows to save a frame in the Jpeg format. The films fans like the automatic extension of the clip since the very moment you have stopped before.
 
 
Photo
When viewing the pictures you enjoy the pleasant effects of leafing through, and are enabled to quickly add some favourite stills to the album. The pictures in the album are sorted by months, and at that the whole list of photos is showed at the screen. When looking through the stills, you can promptly call up the picture editor or make use of the Photo Fix, which is automatically corrects the colour levels.
 
 
 
 
The phone retains X-Pict slide-presentation without any changing in its functions. Unlike the smartphones G700 and G900, our guest makes you unable to choose a ringtone, which might have accompanied the slide-show, thus you have to content yourself with the moods only.
 
 
Games
Considering the coming A300, which has a good potential to create the quality games, the manufacturer has already placed the games in the multimedia menu. The latter provides a handy access either to call up the started applications or to quickly close them and move to the other ones.
 
RSS
The RSS feeds, featuring all kinds of settings, stands in the title part of the multimedia menu. There are either the links to the downloaded files, or the preinstalled links to the net aggregators.
 
Music
The music player of the third version has nothing to do with the Walkman solutions, thus the sorting sections are as follows: artist, album, all tracks, playlist and podcast. When looking through the library you are enabled to send a chosen track via MMS, e-mail, Bluetooth or add to the current playlist.
 
 
The playing window consists now from the thin progress bar occupying the whole width of the window. The bar has above a small window of Album Art, icons of playing back modes and the current position of the track in the playlist. There is also an information line on the top, where you see the indicators of the signal strength, battery, notifications and time.
Under the line the screen displays the played time and the rest time, ID3-tag and symbols of the navigational key. It is interesting that the navi key itself is equipped with these symbols. When pressing up and down, you call up the current playlist occupying the half of the active window. After changing the orientation in the landscape one, the symbols of the navi key move to the right sight of the scrolling bar.
 
In the settings you can switch on/off the shuffle and repeat moods, the latter suits either a track or a list.
 
The phone has a 5-lines equalizer, which has one user profile and classical Mega Bass.
 
 
The sound quality hasn’t changed in comparison with other A200-based phones of the company. The optimal result can be achieved when utilizing a wireless handset, while the wired solution provides inconsiderable volume reserve and has lesser dynamic than Bluetooth DS970 and DS200 handfrees.
The phone also houses a FM-radio supporting an automatic search for the channels and RDS info stations. All active channels can be saved in the 20 memory cells.
 
 
 
Track ID service has been slightly improved, as now it contains the tabs saving the identified tracks forms.
 
 
Connectivity
The phone comes with Bluetooth 2.0+EDR module on board. The device supports the most profiles corresponding to the following standards:

The data transfer speed is about 100-120 KB/s. The phone provides rather steady connectivity both when sending the bulk files and working with the handfree.
To wire the handset to the PC is simple as a day. There is nothing new in it; the safety disconnection through the Windows utility is again one of the drawbacks of the Fast Port. The data transfer speed totals 1.5-2MB/s with the usage of the 512MB Sony memory card.
 
Games
Among the preinstalled games we are most of all interested in Java 3D-based Need For Speed Pro Street. The quality of the tree-dimensional graphics is obviously worse than that in the rally races in the W910i, though the handset supports the position sensor, which allows to control the play by declining the phone.
 
There is also the set of solitaires. It is nice, that the gameplay of the solitaire counts the limitations to the possible moves, and the opening of the cards automatically starts up the sorting by suits. We can only feel sympathy for those gamers, who like to open the cards one by one from the pack, as the handset doesn’t support this game option.
 
 
Photo Quest Fishing
For the first time we came across with this game in the K770i, but after that it hasn’t been seen in Sony Ericsson phones. The manufacturer is likely to enclose the game in the phones from the Cyber Shot series, as we can see it in both in the C902 and the C702. The idea of the game is pretty simple: a gamer has to take photos of the underwater animals receiving points for each still. In some places you have to pass through nine zones, in which you have to perform some tasks to enter the next part of the cost.

Applications
Photo Mate
Cyber Shot logo placed on the phone casing is backed with a simple manual about the photography, in which you are allowed to fill up with the additional descriptions which are not included in the preinstalled package.
 
 
Face Wrap, a common entertaining utility, allows to joke with the photos of your friend stored in the phone to your heart’s content. Or you can entertain a company taking the portraits right from the interface of this program.
 
 
Camera
The handset is equipped with the Sony 5 megapixel camera with an autofocus and an interestingly implemented protecting shutter. When the shutter-cap is opened, the phone automatically starts the camera interface. Above and below the screen you see the lightning sensors, which reduced the C902 screen in comparison with the C702. There are 8 sensor-keys are available, in fours on each side. The sensors have no contacts, so they respond only to the contact with the human skin. The sensors on the top are in charge of the modes (photo/video/viewing), as well as focus modes. The lower sensors allow to perform the same actions as those dedicated to the keys 3, 6, 9, # in the K850i, the C702 and so on. All sensors as well as the navigational pad and the indicator stripe on the rear panel of the phone are backlit with blue, when shooting.
The backlit is gradually lights and dies down, when you switch on the camera, changes modes and use a self-counter.

The other available settings include picture quality, review, memory type, shutter sound that can be off and reset counter.

It is up to you, how you find the quality of the photos and video, which was made with the R1DA028 firmware. We think that this camera can be used only for fun and can hardly be compared with the cameras at Nokia N82 and Samsung U900.

Phone quality
You will have no complaints about the signal receive level, of course, if you are get used to that on most Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones. The earpiece provides a good loudness in the busy street. We can’t complain about speech rendering, though we don’t admire it as well, for example, in comparison with Motorola phones. The polyphonic loudspeaker is a tat louder than the average one and has rather good low frequencies. The latter parameter is the same as well in the K850i and K790i. The vibration is an average one, but it is good enough for most situation when you carrying the device in the pockets fitting closely the body.
Conclusion
It is strange, but the idea to install the most compact module of the Sony 5 megapixel camera from the smartphone G900 into the new from form the C series turns out to be successful. Sony Ericsson C902 proves to be an interesting device calling attention of the consumers with a good functionality, which can be compared with the W890i, but with larger dimensions. The most catching moment, which form the consumers interest, are the sensors elements of the camera, new concept of the protective shutter, as well as the metal rear panel, which beneficially distinguishes this solution from the other image handsets made by other manufacturers.
But at the same time, it isn’t worth comparing our guest with the rivals, as the result will be poor. The camera in the phone can be compared with those installed in the mass 3 megapixel Nokia solutions, while the screen and software resemble dozens of other phones of Sony Ericsson. The handset has less metal parts than the W890i. That is way the $600 price tag seems to be unreasonable for the fans of SE functional solutions. If you are interested in a camera with the SE nameplate you’d better look to the smartphone G700 and G900, while you are eager to have a slim casing, pay attention to the aluminium W890i. Our guest is for those, who are not repulsed with the price, and attracted with the design.
The company decided to design a mate to the C902, which will has the less interesting design, but featuring Walkman subbrand. The autumn sees this pair making a hay of the top-price segment of the company, which will be calm down with new Sony Ericsson C905.
